Herpes is cured with an antiviral therapy
Valtrex is effectively used to prevent outbreaks of genital herpes as well as the transmission of this infectious disease in couples.
Last years’ surveys have suggested that one of the thing many people worry about is transmitting genital herpes to their partner. In average, this virus affects 1 in 5 persons, and many viruliferous people sometimes don’t have any symptoms and even don’t know they are virus-infected. Genital herpes is considered to be the most common disease due to which the sores occur in the genital area. Then, typical red bumps develop in the genital area. For women, it’s the outer vagina or inner labia; for men, it’s the penis shaft. The bump is itchy and painful and may develop into a sore. In this state, the genital herpes becomes most transmissible.
Genital herpes infected couples have been researched
During the recently conducted study, sexual monogamous partners had to use condoms during sex when treating with Valtrex. According to this research, taking Valtrex cuts the chance of the non-infected partner catching herpes with no symptoms by 50%. The risk of coming down with genital herpes with symptoms in the monogamous partner decreased by 77%.
The study was performed in 126 different sites on four continents. About 1,500 couples in which one partner had genital herpes and another did not have been identified by the researchers. In equal proportions, one group of infected persons took Valtrex, and another one took a placebo. During the 8-month research period, the previously non-infected partners were researched to detect if they had took infection.
The study results offer a background for researching other sex-borne diseases
This study was the first one when a drug has been shown so potent and effective against the spread of infections transmitted by the virus. In addition, the results of the research offer a background for managing other sex-borne diseases.
The findings were pretty impressive. During the treatment of this pathology, Valtrex reduces the period of formation and maturation of the vesicles as well as the frequency of relapses is significantly reduced. Regular daily intake of the drug for preventive purposes reduces the probability of transmission of infection to sexual partners by 75%.
So now, for the first time, we have an effective antiviral medicine that allows a person to take the drug as one form of reducing transmission. To reduce the chance of getting genital herpes from a sexual partner (provided that a person has a normally functioning immune system), he (she) is prescribed to take the medicine at a dose of 500 mg once a day.
Valtrex is contraindicated in the cases of intolerance to acyclovir or valacyclovir, as well as other substances that are contained in the drug. If the person has renal failure, a clinically expressed form of HIV, or takes nephrotoxic drugs, the treatment with Valtrex is performed with the utmost caution.
Way to know you are infected with genital herpes
It has been estimated that 9 out of 10 people do not know they have genital herpes and sometimes may experience only a very mild initial outbreak without observing recurring symptoms of the virus.
There is a phenomenon called asymptomatic shedding. In this state, people do not experience any herpes symptoms but they shed the virus when having sex. So, this virus can be transmitted even when virus-infected people are not experiencing any infection at all.
The effective way to know if a person is virus-infected is to perform an antibody test. This is a blood test, which is usually conducted at a doctor’s office or any clinic.
A permanent way to get rid of the genital herpes has not been founded yet but people who frequently experience outbreaks can get Valtrex once a day to prevent them.
